Overview

With King Uther's sudden death, chaos threatens to engulf Britain. The sorcerer Merlin has visions of a dark future and installs young and impetuous Arthur, Uther's unknown son and heir raised as a commoner, as the new king. The two install themselves in Castle Camelot with their allies, which include Arthur's biological mother, his foster brother, and a quartet of loyal warriors. From Camelot, Arthur tries to build a new and better Britain, where people can live in peace.Meanwhile, Arthur's cold half-sister Morgan plots to take the crown from him. Banished by Uther, who was responsible for her mother's murder to put Arthur's mother on the throne, Morgan is responsible for Uther's death and wants to rule as his successor. Aided by her loyal maid Vivian and the devious nun Sybil, Morgan takes up residence in Castle Pendragon, from where she schemes against Arthur.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY King Uther is dead, and Britain is facing a collapse into total anarchy. The sorcerer Merlin has a plan: find Uther’s unknown heir, Arthur, and place him on the throne. But this isn't the shiny, chivalrous legend you grew up with. Arthur is a naive young man, Merlin is a manipulative and morally grey puppet master, and the real threat comes from Arthur’s half-sister, Morgan, who is willing to use dark magic and cold-blooded betrayal to claim the crown for herself. It’s a gritty, "adult" reimagining of the Arthurian myth that focuses more on the mud, blood, and political maneuvering of the Dark Ages than the magic of the Round Table. THE PROS This is a 6/10 because it features a truly top-tier performance from Eva Green as Morgan. She is magnetic, terrifying, and easily the best reason to watch the show; her descent into darkness is handled with a level of intensity that outshines everything else on screen. Joseph Fiennes also brings a fresh, unhinged energy to Merlin, portraying him more as a desperate political strategist than a wise wizard. It hits the mark for fans of the "historical grit" genre who liked the look of *The Pillars of the Earth* or *The White Queen*, offering high production values and some decent, visceral action sequences that make the ancient world feel appropriately brutal. THE CONS It misses a higher rating because, unfortunately, the "Arthur" in this Arthurian legend is a bit of a wet blanket. Jamie Campbell Bower struggles to bring the necessary gravitas to the future king, often coming across as more of a sulky teenager than a legendary leader. It settles at a 6 because it had the misfortune of premiering at the exact same time as *Game of Thrones*, which did everything *Camelot* was trying to do—the grit, the sex, the politics—ten times better.
