⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 10/10 THE SUMMARY A terrifying look at the 1986 nuclear disaster that feels more like a horror story than a history lesson. It follows the scientists, firemen, and miners who had to clean up the mess while the Soviet government tried to act like everything was fine. It’s a brutal, honest look at the cost of lies and the brave people who walked into a death sentence to save half of Europe. THE PROS This is legendary because the tension is absolutely suffocating. Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgård are incredible as two men who know they’re already dead but keep going anyway. It hits a 10 because it manages to make a courtroom scene about nuclear physics as gripping as a slasher flick. The sound design is a total standout—that constant, clicking hum of the Geiger counters will stay with you long after the credits roll. It’s a masterpiece of atmosphere that never lets up. THE CONS It’s incredibly grim, so don't expect a fun night in. While some of the science is tweaked for drama and a few characters are made up to represent groups of people, it doesn't take away from the raw impact of the story. It’s hard to watch at times, especially when the reality of radiation sickness sets in, but that’s exactly why it’s so powerful. THE VERDICT 10/10. A smart and genuinely perfect masterpiece. It’s a legendary series that everyone needs to see at least once, even if it leaves you wanting to sit in a dark room for an hour afterwards. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To keep the sound honest, the composer actually went to a decommissioned nuclear plant and recorded the ambient noises of the machinery to create the haunting score.• The creators decided to let the actors use their own accents instead of fake Russian ones because they didn't want anything to distract from the raw emotion of the performances.• The "suicide squad" of divers who went under the reactor actually survived the mission in real life, despite everyone at the time believing it was a certain death sentence. THE VIBE Like the taste of metal on your tongue. It smells of wet graphite, ozone, and the cold, sterile dread of a hospital corridor.
