Overview

When Reed Richards, Sue and Johnny Storm and pilot Ben Grimm take a premature space flight on a new shuttle, they find themselves massively bombarded with cosmic radiation. Barely managing to re-enter and land safely, the quartet find themselves forever transformed with superpowers. Deciding to use these new powers to help people, they form the Fantastic Four, a superhero team dedicated to the protection of Earth from menaces like the Latverian King Dr. Doom and Galactus, the planet consumer.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY Four friends—Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm—take an experimental spacecraft into orbit to study a passing comet. After being blasted by cosmic rays, they crash-land back on Earth with strange new powers: Reed can stretch, Sue can turn invisible, Johnny can burst into flames, and Ben becomes a rocky giant called the Thing. They soon find themselves in a battle against Reed’s old college rival, Victor von Doom, who has become a masked dictator with plans to destroy New York City. This is the infamous "unreleased" movie that was made on a tiny budget just so the producers could keep the rights to the characters. THE PROS It hits a 4 because there is an honest sense of heart and effort that shines through the low-budget mess. The cast clearly thought they were making a real blockbuster and put their all into the performances, especially the guy playing the Thing, who managed to make a rubber suit feel sad and human. The costume for Dr. Doom is actually a highlight, looking much more like the comic books than many of the big-budget versions that came later. It’s a simple, honest take on the superhero origin story that stays very close to the original 1960s comics, which is a nice change of pace from the overly complicated plots we get today. THE CONS It stays at a 4 because the special effects are a total head-scratcher, even for 1994. Since they had almost no money, Reed’s stretching is often just a long rubber glove being waved in front of the camera, and the Human Torch is mostly just a cartoonish drawing on the screen. The sound quality is a slog, with Dr. Doom’s voice sounding muffled because they couldn't afford to redo his lines in a studio. It misses a higher mark because the plot is rushed and feels more like a fan film than a professional production. While it’s a fun piece of history, the actual experience of watching it can be a bit of a struggle once the novelty of the "lost movie" wears off. THE VERDICT 4/10. A cheap, weird, but strangely charming piece of Marvel history. It’s a fair shout for fans who want to see where it all began, but for everyone else, it’s mostly just an honest curiosity. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The movie was never officially released; Marvel executives reportedly bought the film and ordered all the copies to be destroyed because they were worried such a cheap-looking movie would damage the brand.• The cast and crew were never told the movie was going to be shelved; they spent their own money on travel and publicity, fully believing they were about to become world-famous stars.• Because there was no budget for music, the trailer actually used the soundtrack from another low-budget movie called 'Battle Beyond the Stars' to try and make the action feel more epic. THE VIBE Like a Saturday morning cartoon made of cardboard. It smells of old rubber masks, dusty film reels, and the metallic tang of a low-budget dream.
