⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 THE SUMMARY Danny Rand is a billionaire heir who vanished in a plane crash fifteen years ago, only to reappear in New York City looking like a homeless wanderer with a glowing hand. He’s spent his time in the mystical city of K'un-Lun training to be a "Living Weapon," and now he wants his company back. But instead of the mystical martial arts epic everyone expected, the show spends an odd amount of time on corporate boardroom drama and family squabbles. Danny has to juggle fighting a shadowy ninja cult called The Hand while trying to prove to his childhood friends that he isn't just a crazy person with some decent karate moves. THE PROS The second season is a massive improvement over the first, finally giving us some of the better fight choreography and mystical elements the show deserved from the start. Tom Pelphrey as Ward Meachum is the secret weapon of the series; he takes a character that could have been a boring suit and turns him into a fascinating, mess of a human being. Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing is also a highlight—she’s arguably a better fighter and a more interesting lead than Danny himself. When the show actually leans into the "Daughters of the Dragon" vibe with Colleen and Misty Knight, it actually starts to find its rhythm. THE CONS It’s a 5/10 because the first season is a slog. For a show about the world’s greatest martial artist, the fight scenes in the beginning are clunky, over-edited, and lack any real impact. Danny Rand himself can be incredibly frustrating; he’s supposed to be a Zen master, but he spends most of the time throwing temper tantrums like a bored teenager. It misses the mark because it tries to be a corporate thriller and a kung-fu flick at the same time, but doesn't really succeed at either. It’s easily the weakest link in the original Defenders lineup, often feeling like it’s just filling time until the crossover. THE VERDICT A 5/10. It’s the definition of "just okay." Season 2 almost saves it by fixing the action and focusing on better characters, but the damage from the first thirteen episodes is hard to ignore. It isn't a 6 or 7 because it lacks the grit of Daredevil or the style of Luke Cage, leaving it in a weird middle ground where it’s never quite as cool as it should be. If you’re a Marvel completionist, you’ll watch it, but you’ll probably find yourself scrolling on your phone through most of the boardroom meetings. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Last Minute Lead: Finn Jones was cast as Danny Rand just weeks before filming began. Because of the tight schedule, he often had to learn the complex fight choreography only minutes before the cameras started rolling, which is why some of the action in the first season looks a bit stiff.• Bruce Lee Vibes: In the comics, Iron Fist was created in the 1970s to cash in on the massive martial arts craze led by Bruce Lee. The show tries to nod to this by giving Danny a "hick in the big city" routine similar to Lee's character in *The Way of the Dragon*.• The 66th: While the show focuses on Danny, he isn't the first person to hold the title. In the lore, he is actually the 66th Iron Fist. We get a glimpse of a previous Iron Fist from the 1940s in some old archival footage, showing what the "Living Weapon" looks like when they actually wear the classic mask. THE VIBE Like a board meeting that gets interrupted by a guy in a hoodie doing a backflip. It smells like expensive cologne and incense. It’s confused, occasionally exciting, but mostly just a bit too slow for its own good. It makes you want to go to a dojo, meditate for five minutes, and then realize you’d rather just order a pizza.
