⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Rowan Fielding is a brilliant neurosurgeon who discovers she has a terrifying, unintentional power: she can kill with her mind. As she investigates her origins, she’s drawn into the dark world of the Mayfair family in New Orleans—a dynasty of powerful witches haunted by a sinister, shape-shifting entity known as Lasher. It’s the second entry in the Immortal Universe, trading the blood-soaked jazz of vampires for a gothic, Southern-fried tale of inherited trauma, occult secrets, and a house that definitely hasn't been cleaned in a century. THE PROS This is a 7/10 because it captures the "gothic dread" of Anne Rice’s writing perfectly. Alexandra Daddario is great as the overwhelmed Rowan, bringing a wide-eyed intensity to a woman who is slowly realizing her family tree is a nightmare. It hits the mark because of the production design—the Mayfair manor is a character in itself, dripping with rot, ivy, and atmosphere. It’s a winner for the mythology; the "Lasher" entity (played with a creepy, seductive energy by Jack Huston) makes for a fascinating, non-traditional villain. Following the crossover hints in the 2024 and 2025 seasons of the Immortal Universe, the show has found a better rhythm, especially as it starts to lean into the weirder, more high-concept "witch-craft" from the later books. THE CONS It misses an 8 or 9 because the pacing in the first season was notoriously uneven. While *Interview with the Vampire* felt sleek and modern, *Mayfair Witches* occasionally felt a bit like a standard supernatural soap opera. It settles at a 7 because the Talamasca subplot—the secret society watching the witches—didn't quite land with the same impact as it does in the books, sometimes feeling like a distraction from Rowan’s journey. Some fans also found the transition from medical drama to full-blown occult horror a bit jarring in the early episodes. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. It is a moody, stylish, and dark addition to the Anne Rice universe that is finally finding its feet. It isn't an 8 because of those early pacing stumbles, but for fans of Southern Gothic and family secrets, it’s a total winner. Anticipated: With Season 2 having just wrapped up and the "Immortal Universe" crossover event looming for late 2026, the Mayfair legacy is about to get a lot more interesting. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Brain Power: To play a neurosurgeon, Alexandra Daddario spent time watching actual surgery videos. She mentioned in interviews that while she can't perform brain surgery, she's now very good at "looking like she’s thinking very hard about a frontal lobe."• The "Hush" House: The Mayfair manor used in the show is the famous "Elms Mansion" on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans. The crew had to add significant "artificial rot" and overgrown plants to the beautiful historic building to make it look like the decaying, cursed home from the novels.• Lasher's Look: The visual effects for Lasher's more "monstrous" forms were inspired by 17th-century woodcuts and occult illustrations. The goal was to make him look like something that didn't quite belong in the 21st century, even when he’s appearing as a handsome man. THE VIBE Like a humid night in a garden full of dead roses. It smells like damp moss, old lace, and something burning in the distance. It’s eerie, sensual, and a bit suffocating. It makes you want to research your genealogy, avoid mirrors, and realize that some family traditions are better left buried.
