⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Set in 12th-century England during the rule of Henry II, this grounded reimagining follows young Rob Locksley (Jack Patten), the son of a Saxon forester. Far from the merry man in green tights, this Rob is a boy shaped by the brutal reality of Norman occupation and the loss of his family’s status. As he retreats into Sherwood Forest to lead a band of rebel outlaws, he crosses paths with Marian (Lauren McQueen), a Norman earl’s daughter navigating her own dangerous double life in the courts. It’s a gritty, pained origin story that trades campy archery for a smart, violent, and romantic look at a country on the brink of rebellion. THE PROS This is an amazing series because it finally makes a legend feel like actual history. It hits a 9 because the "Saxon vs. Norman" cultural tension is a total highlight; it adds a sincere weight to the conflict that most versions ignore. Jack Patten is great as a more vulnerable, relatable Robin, but Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham is an absolute masterclass—he brings a complex, menacing authority that makes every scene feel high-stakes. The production is top-tier, with the Serbian locations providing a lush, beautiful backdrop for the pained grit of medieval life. It’s a smart, slow-burn epic that balances political drama with some of the most visceral and honest action choreography we've seen in years. THE CONS It stays at a 9 because the 10-hour format means the early episodes can feel like a bit of a slog as they slowly build the world. It misses a perfect mark because some of the historical inaccuracies—like the specific fashions and armor styles—are an honest head-scratcher for the history buffs. The pacing in the middle of the season drags slightly when it focuses on the internal bickering of the Merry Men, which can feel a bit repetitive compared to the intense drama in the Norman courts. While the romance is a sincere highlight, a few of the dialogue choices lean a bit too modern, which might be a fair shout for pulling you out of the 12th-century immersion. THE VERDICT 9/10. An epic, gritty, and genuinely refreshing take on a timeless hero. It’s amazing, and easily a fair shout for the best version of Robin Hood ever put to screen. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To keep the medieval world feeling honest, director Jonathan English chose to film in Serbia, utilizing the country’s ancient forests and custom-built stone forts to avoid the "polished" look of UK studio sets.• Sean Bean actually performed many of his own horse-riding stunts, bringing a level of veteran presence to the set that helped the younger cast members settle into the pained, physical reality of the era.• The series was renewed for a second season in February 2026, just months after the first season became a sleeper hit on MGM+, proving that there's still massive hunger for a grounded Arthurian or Robin Hood epic.
