Overview

Ben Mears has returned to his hometown to write a book about the supposedly haunted Marsten House. When people around the Marsten House start dying mysteriously, Mears discovers that the owner of the mansion is actually a vampire who is turning them into an army of undead slaves.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10​ THE SUMMARY ​The 1979 miniseries is the reason an entire generation of kids was too terrified to sleep near a window. Directed by horror legend Tobe Hooper (Texas Chain Saw Massacre), this three-hour epic follows Ben Mears (David Soul) as he returns to the creepy town of Jerusalem’s Lot. While he’s busy obsessing over the old Marsten House, a suave antiques dealer played by James Mason moves in with a "partner" who turns out to be a blue-skinned, non-verbal nightmare. It’s the ultimate "Dracula in small-town America" story, and it doesn't care about your sleep schedule.​ THE PROS ​The atmosphere is heavy enough to crush you. The "window scene" with the floating vampire boy scratching at the glass is arguably the most iconic moment in TV horror history—it’s pure, nightmare-fuel imagery that doesn't need CGI to work. Kurt Barlow, the lead vampire, is a terrifying homage to Nosferatu rather than the suave, cape-wearing version, making him feel like an ancient, rotting plague. James Mason also delivers a masterclass in "polite evil," making every interaction feel like a threat wrapped in velvet.​ THE CONS ​It’s definitely a product of the late 70s. The pacing is very slow by modern standards, and the "TV movie" lighting can feel a bit flat during the daytime scenes. Because it was made for network television, there’s almost zero gore, so it has to rely entirely on suspense and creepy makeup. Some of the acting from the townspeople is a bit "community theater," and the ending feels slightly rushed compared to the painstaking build-up of the first two hours.​ THE VERDICT ​A "Guaranteed Banger" and a cornerstone of the genre. If you can handle the 70s aesthetics and the slow-burn approach, it offers a brand of creeping dread that modern jump-scare movies can't replicate. It’s the gold standard for Stephen King adaptations and the reason you should always keep your curtains tightly drawn at night.​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA ​ To achieve the "floating" effect for the vampire children, the actors were actually pulled on wires while the camera was filmed upside down, and reverse-motion was used to make their movements feel unearthly. Also, Reggie Nalder (who played Barlow) wasn't allowed to eat while in his makeup, which took hours to apply, so he spent most of the shoot miserable and hungry—which probably helped with his "pissed-off demon" performance.​ THE VIBE ​ Like a cold fog rolling into a graveyard. It’s eerie, patient, and smells like old wood and dried blood. Highly recommended for a 2 AM watch with the lights off.
