Overview

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY In a world where being a "Hero" isn't a choice but a death sentence, Xylo Forbartz is a man who has lost everything. Formerly a legendary Holy Knight, he was convicted of the ultimate sin: killing the goddess he was sworn to protect. Now, he's been "sentenced to be a hero," forced into the front lines of a brutal war against demonic faeries that are eating away at the edges of humanity. Alongside a squad of other criminals and a new, mysterious goddess named Teoritta, Xylo has to fight through an endless cycle of suicide missions just to stay alive one more day. THE PROS This show is an honest breath of fresh air for the dark fantasy genre, ditching the usual "chosen one" tropes for something much more cynical and gritty. It hits an 8 because the animation from Studio Kai is top-tier, especially the way they use color to make the demonic faeries look both beautiful and terrifying. The dynamic between Xylo and Teoritta is a total highlight; it’s not your typical romance, but a pained, complicated alliance between two people trapped by a corrupt system. The "Suicide Squad" vibe of the Penal Hero Unit 9004 adds a lot of personality to the show, with each member bringing their own messy backstories and unique powers to the fight. It’s a smart, fast-paced series that keeps the tension high and the world-building deep. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the pacing can feel a bit rushed, especially in the middle episodes as it tries to cover a lot of ground from the light novels. It misses a higher mark because some of the secondary characters in the hero unit don't get quite enough screen time to really make you care about them before they’re thrown into the meat grinder. The political intrigue happening in the background is interesting, but it can occasionally be a head-scratcher that pulls focus away from the more exciting frontline battles. While the action is great, some of the CGI used for the larger monster swarms can look a bit flat compared to the stunning hand-drawn character work. THE VERDICT 8/10. A dark, punchy, and visually gorgeous ride. It’s a great result for fans of *Hell’s Paradise* or *Chainsaw Man* who want a story that’s as honest about its brutality as it is about its heart. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To keep the action feeling fluid, the director used a special "cutting" style for the battle scenes that was inspired by high-speed sports broadcasts, making the fights feel faster and more frantic.• The opening theme song "Kill the Noise" by Spyair became a massive hit in Japan during the Winter 2026 season, topping the charts for weeks after the show's hour-long premiere.• The author of the original light novels, Rocket Shokai, was heavily involved in the anime and even suggested changing how Xylo and Teoritta’s relationship grows to better fit a TV format.
