    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Created by James Graham, this powerful BBC drama is the most intelligent crime show on the site. Inspired by real events in Nottinghamshire, the story kicks off with the murder of a former union activist, Gary Jackson, whose death reignites divisions dating back to the 1984 miners' strike. David Morrissey stars as Ian St Clair, a man hunting for a killer while navigating a community fractured by "spycops" and decades-old grudges. The second season shifts the focus to a brutal turf war between the Sparrow and Branson families. As of May 2026, the series is in a fantastic position, with a third season officially in production. THE PROS This is a legendary series because it manages to be a gripping "whodunnit" and a serious look at the state of the country at the same time. The ensemble cast is a standout; Lesley Manville and David Morrissey provide a genuine gravity that keeps you hooked. The writing is sharp, using the history of "Shottingham" to explore how the past still haunts the present day. Season 2 introduced a chilling new dynamic with the Branson family, proving the show has legs way beyond the original miners' strike mystery. The production is top-tier, using atmospheric Nottinghamshire locations to create a real sense of mounting dread. THE CONS It stays at a 9 because the deliberate, slower pacing might feel like a struggle for viewers expecting a high-octane thriller. It misses a perfect 10 because the sprawling cast in Season 2 was a bit of a juggle, making it hard to track every intersecting family thread. Some found the theatrical finale of Season 1 a bit of a stretch compared to the realistic build-up of the earlier episodes. While the acting is world-class, the constant focus on historical trauma can be quite heavy and might leave you wanting a bit more of a hopeful note. THE VERDICT 9/10. It’s a fantastic series for fans of prestige British television and a solid choice if you want a show that actually has something to say about how a divided country heals.
