⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Bob Lee Swagger is back, and this time he has 10 episodes a season to prove he didn't pull the trigger. *Shooter* (2016–2018) is a TV expansion of the Stephen Hunter novel *Point of Impact* and the 2007 Mark Wahlberg film. Ryan Phillippe stars as the exiled Marine sniper who gets coaxed back into the fray by his old commander (Omar Epps) to stop a presidential assassination, only to find himself holding the smoking gun. It’s a three-season conspiracy thriller that leans heavily into ballistics, "overwatch," and the government’s endless supply of shady bureaucrats. By April 2026, it’s remembered as a solid, high-octane procedural that had a bit of a cursed start in the real world. THE PROS The technical details are a total win; the show treats long-range shooting with a sincere, nerdy respect, often explaining windage and "cold bore" shots in a way that feels like a masterclass for armchair snipers. Ryan Phillippe is the business—he brings a quiet, blue-collar intensity to Swagger that makes him feel like a genuine "good man with a rifle." The chemistry between him and Omar Epps’ Isaac Johnson is a highlight of the 900+ archive, shifting from brotherhood to betrayal and back again with believable grit. I was slightly gutted when USA Network axed it in 2018, especially after Omar Epps hinted that "backdoor politics" played a bigger role in the cancellation than the actual ratings.
