⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARYA gritty, stylized live-action comic book series that perfectly blends classic comic mythos with old-school detective fiction. Set in a bleak, black-and-white 1930s New York, the story follows an aging, down-on-his-luck private investigator who is struggling to deal with his past life as the city’s lone superhero. When a complex new case lands on his desk involving corrupt politicians and a dangerous criminal underworld, he is forced to pull the mask back on and confront his own demons. THE PROSNicolas Cage is absolutely spectacular in the lead role, channeling classic Hollywood icons like Humphrey Bogart while bringing his signature, eccentric energy to the weary detective. The visual style of the series is stunning, utilizing gorgeous shadow work, sharp contrasts, and a brilliant neo-noir aesthetic that makes every single frame look like a vintage comic book page. The action sequences are delightfully raw and grounded, focusing more on brutal fistfights and clever detective work than massive, shiny superhero spectacle. THE CONSBecause the show is deeply committed to its slow, methodical detective mystery rhythm, the pacing in the middle episodes can feel a bit sluggish. A few of the supporting mobster characters are written with slightly generic gangster cliches that feel a bit too familiar for a show trying to be this unique. The decision to keep the world entirely desaturated works brilliantly for the mood, but it might feel a touch draining for viewers binge-watching several episodes in one sitting. THE VERDICTAn 8/10.
