    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 ​ THE SUMMARY ​Destiny is all! If Vikings is the heavy metal album of the Norse world, The Last Kingdom is the sharp, perfectly paced historical thriller. Set in the 9th and 10th centuries, it follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon), a Saxon nobleman’s son who is captured and raised by Danes. He spends his life caught between two worlds, bound by oaths to the visionary King Alfred of Wessex (David Dawson) while his heart remains with the Vikings who gave him a home. It’s a 46-episode journey (capped off by the 2023 movie Seven Kings Must Die) that chronicles the bloody birth of a united England. ​ THE PROS ​David Dawson as King Alfred is an absolute "Masterpiece." While most historical shows focus only on the sword-swingers, Dawson’s portrayal of a frail, brilliant, and pious king is "The Business." The dynamic between the street-smart, pagan Uhtred and the strategic, Christian Alfred is a "Guaranteed Banger" and the emotional engine of the series. The show also avoids the "Languid Burn" that traps other epics; the pacing is relentless, and the stakes feel genuinely lethal. Unlike its rivals, The Last Kingdom manages to make the political maneuvering just as exciting as the shield-wall battles. Plus, the supporting cast—especially the bromance between Uhtred, Finan, and Sihtric—is "The Business" for anyone who loves a "found family" vibe. ​ THE CONS ​It’s a 9/10 because the "Aging Game" is a bit of a "head-scratcher." Uhtred is supposed to be in his 80s by the end of the series, but Alexander Dreymon somehow stays looking like a 30-year-old fitness model throughout the entire 45-year timeline. It misses the perfect 10/10 mark because a few of the middle seasons suffer from a repetitive "Uhtred gets screwed over by a King, goes into exile, then saves the day" cycle. Some of the later villains also feel a bit like "The Garbage" compared to iconic early-season antagonists like Ubba or the legendary Skorpa. ​ THE VERDICT ​A 9/10. It’s "The Business." The Last Kingdom is the smarter, leaner cousin of Vikings. It balances heart-pounding action with genuine historical weight and some of the best character arcs in modern TV. It’s a Masterpiece of adaptation that actually improves on the books in several places. By 2026, it has solidified itself as a cult classic that many argue is actually the superior show in the "Saxon vs. Dane" genre. If you haven't chanted "Uhtred, Son of Uhtred" at your TV yet, you’re doing 2026 wrong. ​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA ​* The Real Bebbanburg: The fortress of Bebbanburg is a real place—it's now known as Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland.
