Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY The show that officially broke the "video game adaptation curse." The Last of Us is a haunting, cinematic journey across a post-apocalyptic America decimated by a fungal brain infection. We follow Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor haunted by his past, who is tasked with escorting Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a teenage girl who might be humanity's last hope for a cure. What starts as a simple job turns into a devastating exploration of love, grief, and the brutal lengths one will go to for family. By April 2026, we’ve witnessed the fallout of the first season’s massive lie and the brutal, vengeance-fueled cycle of Season 2, which wrapped up its run on HBO in May 2025. THE PROS The chemistry between Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey is a total win; they don't just play the characters, they inhabit them so deeply that it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the roles. The show does a brilliant job of expanding the lore beyond the games—the "Long, Long Time" episode in Season 1 remains a sincere masterpiece of storytelling that moved even the most cynical viewers to tears. The production value is massive, with the "overgrown city" aesthetic looking incredibly tactile and lived-in. Season 2 stepped up the intensity by introducing Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, providing a performance that makes you question your own moral compass. It is a rare show that manages to be a heart-pounding thriller and a soul-crushing character study all at once. THE CONS It is a 9/10 because the pacing in Season 2 can feel like a bit of a slow burn, especially when the perspective shifts and forces you to wait for the resolution of a massive cliffhanger. It misses the 10/10 mark because some of the "stealth" sequences can feel a bit gamey compared to the grounded reality of the rest of the show. It was a head-scratcher for some viewers why Season 2 only covered the first half of the second game, leaving us in an agonizing wait for the recently confirmed Season 3. For the faint of heart, the "Rat King" sequence and some of the more visceral "infected" kills might be total garbage to sit through, as the show really leans into the body-horror of the Cordyceps. THE VERDICT A 9/10. This isn't just a great "game show," it’s one of the best dramas of the decade, period. It’s a sincere, heavy, and beautifully acted epic that stays with you long after the credits roll. I was slightly gutted that Season 2 ended on such a massive unresolved note with the "Convergence" finale in May 2025, but the wait for Season 3—which is currently filming in Vancouver—is already the biggest topic of 2026. It is an essential crown jewel of the 900+ archive that proves that sometimes, the real monsters aren't the ones with mushrooms growing out of their heads.
