⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY The ultimate "frenemy" road trip moves to the Big Apple! Set a few years after the main series finale, The Walking Dead: Dead City follows Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they travel into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan. The island has been cut off from the mainland for years, creating a vertical nightmare of skyscraper-dwelling survivors and "urbanized" walkers. Maggie’s son, Hershel, has been kidnapped by a sadistic former Savior known as The Croat, and Negan is the only one who knows how the villain thinks. It is a high-stakes rescue mission that forces Maggie to work with the man who murdered her husband, while Negan tries to outrun his past and a relentless marshal from the New Babylon Federation. THE PROS The chemistry between Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a Guaranteed Banger. Their scenes together are electric, filled with decades of trauma and a simmering tension that makes every conversation feel dangerous. Manhattan is a Masterpiece of a setting; seeing zombies fall from penthouses like "undead rain" is The Business and a breath of fresh air for the franchise. The show does The Business by leaning into a dark, "Escape from New York" vibe, using the narrow streets and sewers to create a claustrophobic horror experience. The Croat is also a standout villain—he is a Masterpiece of eccentric cruelty who feels like a twisted reflection of what Negan used to be, adding a psychological layer that keeps you hooked through both seasons. THE CONS It is an 8/10 because the "Maggie hates Negan" loop, while justified, can start to feel like a bit of a Languid Burn after several episodes of the same arguments. It is a head-scratcher how they keep finding new ways for Maggie to be betrayed, making some plot twists feel a bit manufactured for drama. It misses the 9/10 mark because it occasionally relies on "convenient" timing to save the leads from impossible situations. Some of the new supporting characters feel a bit like Garbage compared to the heavyweights, often serving as little more than walker-fodder to keep the body count up. By 2026, the pacing of Season 2 is generally praised, but some fans still find the 6-to-8 episode seasons a bit too short for the massive New York scope. THE VERDICT An 8/10. It is The Business for anyone who missed the grit and character focus of the early Walking Dead years. It is a Masterpiece of urban horror that proves there is still plenty of life left in the walker world. It is Garbage only if you are completely tired of the Maggie/Negan drama—but for most, their complex relationship is the best reason to watch. With Season 3 officially in the works as of July 2025, this is an essential chapter for the 900+ archive that brings a much-needed edge back to the universe. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA * The "Nope" Moment: When Negan encounters a swarm of cockroaches in the subway and immediately retreats saying "Nope!", Jeffrey Dean Morgan actually improvised that line.
