⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARYThe Walking Dead: World Beyond is the two-season "limited event" that tried to answer the question: What happens to the kids who grew up inside the walls? Set ten years after the start of the apocalypse, the story follows two sisters, Iris and Hope Bennett, who lead a small group of teenagers out of their safe "Campus Colony" in Nebraska on a cross-country mission to find their father. Along the way, they discover the dark secrets of the Civic Republic Military (CRM)—the same shadowy group that flew Rick Grimes away in a helicopter. It is a coming-of-age story wrapped in a zombie skin, focusing more on teenage angst and discovery than the usual "stab-to-the-head" grind. THE PROSThe CRM lore is The Business. For hardcore fans, this show is the primary source of information about the most powerful faction in the universe, and seeing how they operate is a Guaranteed Banger. The second season, in particular, steps up the stakes and moves away from the "YA novel" vibe into something much more intense and meaningful. The character of Huck (Annet Mahendru) is a Masterpiece—she is easily the most interesting person on screen, carrying a level of moral ambiguity and grit that the teenagers lack. When the show stops focusing on "teenage feelings" and starts showing the massive, terrifying scale of the new world order, it actually becomes quite compelling. THE CONSIt is a 6/10 because the first season is a massive Languid Burn that feels like a Disney Channel version of the apocalypse. The teenage protagonists can be a head-scratcher; they make baffling decisions and carry "spear-props" that look like they were made in a high school drama department. It is Garbage that the show takes so long to get moving, with several episodes in the middle feeling like premium filler. It misses the 9/10 mark because it lacks the raw, survivalist tension of the original series or the best parts of Fear. By 2026, it is mostly remembered as the "bridge" that set up the massive Rick and Michonne return, rather than a standalone classic. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA* The "Snot" Walkers: To make the zombies in World Beyond look "fresh" and different, the SFX team used a specific type of clear slime and moss to show they had been stuck in the damp Nebraska environment for a decade.* The Silent Kill: In Season 1, the kids are so inexperienced that they actually struggle to kill a single "Empty" (their word for walkers). This was a deliberate choice by the writers to show how sheltered the Campus Colony really was.* The Rick Connection: While Rick Grimes doesn't appear in the show, the CRM jacket worn by Silas in the later episodes is the exact same model seen on Rick in the 2024 spin-off The Ones Who Live.* The "Last Supper" Tradition: Just like the main show, the cast of World Beyond held a "Last Supper" for every major character that was killed off, though since the cast was smaller, the dinners were reportedly much more "intimate and tearful."* The 2026 Connection: With the 2026 anniversary of the franchise approaching, fans have been revisiting World Beyond specifically to find the "hidden" references to the Portland Colony, which is rumored to be the setting for a new 2027 project.
