Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Welcome to Beechwood Island, the private summer playground of the Sinclair family, where everyone is beautiful, wealthy, and fundamentally broken. *We Were Liars* (2025) is the Amazon Prime adaptation of E. Lockhart’s TikTok-famous YA novel. It follows Cadence Sinclair (Emily Carey) as she returns to the island two years after a mysterious accident she can’t remember. Reunited with "The Liars"—her cousins and the boy she loves—she begins to piece together the horrific truth of what happened during "Summer Fifteen." By April 2026, it’s remembered as the show that launched a thousand "reaction videos," even if the twist was the worst-kept secret on the internet. THE PROS The visuals are a total win; the show captures that "old money" coastal aesthetic with a sincere, sun-drenched beauty that makes the 900+ archive look like a high-end fashion magazine. Emily Carey is the business, carrying the weight of Cadence's migraines and memory loss with a sincere, fragile intensity. The show’s biggest win is the chemistry between the four Liars—their "us against the world" vibe feels genuine, making the eventual fallout hurt that much more. Mamie Gummer and the rest of the Sinclair sisters perfectly nail the "passive-aggressive inheritance warfare" that provides the toxic backdrop for the teenagers' rebellion. THE CONS It is a 7/10 because if you already know the twist, the first four episodes can feel like a serious Languid Burn. It misses the 8/10 mark because the "whimsical" metaphors from the book (like Cadence bleeding out onto the floor) are handled with a bit of a head-scratcher CGI approach that doesn't always land. It is total garbage that the "shocking" finale was spoiled for so many people by social media algorithms before the show even dropped in 2025.
