MaXXXine (2024) Rating: 6/10 Ti West wraps up his X trilogy by moving the carnage to 1980s Hollywood, traded the overalls for blue eyeshadow and enough cocaine-fueled ambition to power the Sunset Strip. It’s a love letter to the "Satanic Panic" era, but it’s a letter written in neon ink that starts to fade by the final act. THE SUMMARY Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) has finally made it out of that Texas farmhouse and into the big leagues—or at least, into an audition for a high-budget horror sequel. But as she claws her way toward stardom, a mysterious killer dubbed the "Night Stalker" starts picking off her friends, and a greasy private eye (Kevin Bacon) starts digging up her bloody past. Maxine has to decide if she’s a scream queen or just a queen of screams. THE PROS Mia Goth is a goddamn treasure. She plays Maxine with a "don't mess with me" grit that makes her one of the best final girls in modern history. The 1980s aesthetic is flawless—the film feels like it was dunked in a vat of VHS static and hairspray. The supporting cast is a hoot, especially Kevin Bacon chewing the scenery like it’s a five-course meal and Elizabeth Debicki playing a high-brow director who looks like she’d murder you for missed lighting. THE CONS The mystery is about as deep as a Hollywood casting couch. The "big reveal" of the killer is something you’ll probably guess within the first twenty minutes, and the climax feels oddly rushed compared to the slow-burn tension of X and Pearl. It leans so hard into the "style over substance" vibe that by the end, it feels more like a very long music video than a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. THE VERDICT A 6/10. It’s worth watching for Mia Goth’s eyebrows alone, but as a horror movie, it’s the weakest of the three. It’s flashy, loud, and fun, but it lacks the genuine "creep factor" that made its predecessors so iconic. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA The film was shot on the real Universal Studios backlot, including the famous Psycho house—which is a nice meta-nod, considering Maxine is trying to become a horror star. Also, Mia Goth’s "I’m a star!" line became a viral meme before the movie even hit theaters, proving that Maxine Minx is the only influencer we actually need. THE VIBE Neon-soaked sleaze. It feels like watching an old slasher tape you found in the back of a video store behind the "curtain" section. Best watched while wearing way too much denim and dreaming of fame. ️
