⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Trading the quiet cornfields for the loudest city on Earth, this prequel takes us back to the moment the lights went out in New York City. Lupita Nyong'o stars as Sam, a terminally ill woman who finds herself trapped in Manhattan when the sound-sensitive monsters drop from the sky. Unlike the previous films, this isn't about survival for the sake of the future; Sam just wants a final slice of pizza from her favorite childhood spot. Joined by a terrified law student (Joseph Quinn) and an incredibly calm cat named Frodo, she navigates a crumbling city where every footstep could be her last. THE PROS Lupita Nyong'o is incredible, delivering a performance that is deeply emotional and sincere without needing much dialogue; her face tells the whole story. Joseph Quinn is a great match for her, bringing a frantic, vulnerable energy that makes their unlikely partnership feel honest and earned. It’s an 8/10 because the shift in setting to NYC is a masterstroke—the scale of the destruction is massive, and the tension of trying to stay quiet in a city designed for noise is gripping. Michael Sarnoski (Pig) brings a more soulful, intimate touch to the franchise, focusing on the small human moments amidst the chaos. The scenes in the subway tunnels are a total highlight, using sound design to make the darkness feel absolutely suffocating. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the middle part can feel a bit sluggish as the characters take shelter, slowing down the breakneck pace established in the opening. To keep things honest, the actors had to train with the cats for weeks so they would be comfortable being carried through "explosive" set pieces.• Sound of Silence: Much like the first two films, the production used minimal music during the tense sequences, relying instead on "found sounds" from the city—like dripping water or creaking metal—to crank up the dread.• Pizza Quest: The quest for a specific pizza slice isn't just a plot device; it was inspired by director Michael Sarnoski’s own belief that in an apocalypse, people would naturally cling to small, comforting memories of their old lives.
