Overview

A group of criminals kidnap a teenage ballet dancer, the daughter of a notorious gang leader, in order to obtain a ransom of $50 million, but over time, they discover that she is not just an ordinary girl. After the kidnappers begin to diminish, one by one, they discover, to their increasing horror, that they are locked inside with no normal little girl.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY A crew of amateur criminals kidnaps a 12-year-old ballerina, the daughter of a powerful underworld figure, and holes up in a secluded mansion to collect a $50 million ransom. The plan seems simple: watch the girl for 24 hours. But as the sun goes down and the group starts being picked off one by one, they realize they aren't trapped in a house with a helpless child—they’re locked in with a bloodthirsty, ancient predator. What follows is a visceral, high-stakes battle for survival as the captors become the prey in a pained and gory game of hide-and-seek. THE PROS This is an absolute belter for horror fans who love their gore with a side of dark humor. It hits an 8 because Alisha Weir is a total highlight as Abigail, switching from a pained, innocent child to a terrifying, pirouetting monster with terrifying ease. Melissa Barrera brings a sincere, grounded grit to the lead role, and Dan Stevens is an honest joy to watch as he leans into his character's increasingly unhinged desperation. The practical effects are visceral and messy, delivering some of the most punchy and creative kills of the year. It’s an epic reimagining of the vampire genre that feels fresh, funny, and relentlessly entertaining. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the runtime feels a touch long for the simple "cat and mouse" premise, with a few pained dialogue scenes that could have been trimmed to keep the momentum higher. It misses a higher mark because some of the plot twists in the final act are a bit of a head-scratcher, relying on convenient character turns to wrap things up. While the humor is a fair shout for the film's success, a few of the jokes feel a bit pained and pull away from the genuine tension built in the earlier, darker sequences. THE VERDICT 8/10. A gritty, visceral, and bloody good time. It’s an honest win for the Radio Silence directing team and a fair shout for anyone who wants a horror flick that’s as fun as it is pained. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To make Abigail’s pained, supernatural movements feel more visceral, Alisha Weir did many of her own stunts and practiced ballet extensively to ensure her "hunting" scenes looked uniquely elegant and creepy.• The film was shot on location in Ireland at the historic Glenmaroon House, which provided the gritty, labyrinthine atmosphere needed for the pained criminals to get lost in.• In a pained and sincere nod to the classics, the movie was originally titled 'Dracula's Daughter' during development, acting as a loose, modern reimagining of the 1936 Universal Monster movie.
