Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Two hundred years after Ellen Ripley checked out in 'Alien 3', military scientists bring her back. Well, sort of. Using blood samples from the prison planet, they create "Ripley 8"—a clone with Xenomorph DNA and a Queen embryo inside her. The plan is to breed the perfect weapon on the USM Auriga, but the Aliens inevitably get loose. Ripley 8, possessing acid blood and a telepathic link to the monsters, teams up with a band of space mercenaries to stop the ship from reaching Earth. THE PROS Sigourney Weaver is a win as the "feral" version of Ripley; she plays the character with an eerie, predatory edge that’s fresh and engaging. The supporting cast of mercenaries—especially Ron Perlman and Winona Ryder—brings a punchy, ragtag energy that works well. Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s visual style is epic, giving the film a weird, slimy, and distinctly French look that sets it apart from the rest of the franchise. The underwater chase is a standout action sequence, proving that Xenomorphs are just as terrifying when they’re swimming. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the tone is a bit of a mess, shifting between grim horror and campy dark comedy. The "Newborn" creature in the finale is a bit of a damp squib—it’s more grotesque than scary and lacks the sleek, terrifying design of the original Alien. It misses the 8/10 mark because some of the CGI has aged poorly, and the script's attempt at "cool" dialogue can feel a bit sluggish and dated compared to the tension of the first two films. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and a recommendation if you like your sci-fi weird and messy. It’s a winner for Weaver’s performance alone, even if the ending is a bit bizarre. Go and watch it for the basketball scene—it’s a legendary bit of movie magic. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Pure Skill: Sigourney Weaver actually made that behind-the-back basketball shot herself. The director wanted to use CGI, but she insisted on trying it for real and sank it on the sixth take. Ron Perlman was so shocked he nearly ruined the shot by breaking character.• Script Roots: The screenplay was written by Joss Whedon, who originally wrote an ending set on Earth with a massive battle in a hospital, but budget cuts moved the finale back onto the ship.• Family Ties: Winona Ryder only agreed to do the film because she was a massive fan of the franchise.
