⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 THE SUMMARY Acting as a prequel to The Conjuring, this story focuses on John and Mia Form, a young couple expecting their first child. John thinks he’s found the perfect gift for Mia—a rare, vintage porcelain doll in a white wedding dress. However, their home is soon invaded by members of a satanic cult, and their blood spills onto the doll, turning it into a conduit for something truly demonic. As Mia struggles with motherhood and isolation in a new apartment, the doll becomes the centerpiece of a haunting that aims to claim her soul. THE PROS Annabelle Wallis is solid as Mia, doing a lot of the heavy lifting to make the "isolated mother" trope feel sincere and grounded. The elevator scene is a total standout; it’s a masterclass in claustrophobic tension that represents the best moment in the entire film. It’s a 5/10 because the cinematography successfully captures that slightly grainy, 1960s aesthetic that fits the franchise's vibe. There are a few creative scares, like the sewing machine sequence, that land well and keep you on edge. The film also does a decent job of bridging the gap to the Warrens' world, giving fans a bit more context on why that doll is locked in a glass box. THE CONS It lands a 5/10 because it misses the "epic status" of the main series, largely because it lacks the sharp direction and atmosphere that James Wan usually brings. The middle part is quite sluggish, with a lot of repetitive "was that the doll or the wind?" scenes that don't push the plot forward. It misses a higher mark because the characters often feel a bit thin, making it hard to care about their survival as much as you do for the Perrons or the Hodgsons. The final part leans into some very familiar horror clichés that feel a bit predictable, and the CGI for the demonic entity can look a little dated and less honest compared to practical effects. THE VERDICT A 5/10. A middle-of-the-road horror that serves its purpose as an origin story but doesn't offer much more. It’s a decent watch if you’re doing a full Conjuring marathon, but as a standalone, it feels a bit hollow. Not quite a "banger," it’s more of a standard jump-scare flick that plays it safe with the genre's rules.
