⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Greta Gerwig takes the world's most famous doll and gives her a full-blown existential crisis in this candy-colored masterpiece. Margot Robbie is "Stereotypical Barbie," living her best life in the pink paradise of Barbie Land until her feet go flat and she starts thinking about death. To fix her "glitch," she has to travel to the Real World, with a hitchhiking Ken (Ryan Gosling) in tow. What follows is a witty, socially conscious adventure that pokes fun at the patriarchy, Mattel, and the impossible standards of being a woman, all while wrapped in a high-quality aesthetic that feels like a toy box come to life. THE PROS This is a 9/10 because it manages to be a massive blockbuster that actually has something to say. Ryan Gosling is a total winner as Ken; his transition from needy boyfriend to "patriarchy-obsessed" himbo is one of the most legendary comedic performances in years. The production design is absolute quality—everything from the Dreamhouses to the plastic water is honest to the source material and looks stunning on screen. It earns its 9/10 by being hysterically funny and deeply moving at the same time, especially during America Ferrera’s powerful monologue about the contradictions of womanhood.
