Overview

Batman and his sidekick Robin attempt to the foil the sinister schemes of a deranged set of new villains, most notably the melancholy Mr. Freeze, who wants to make Gotham City into an arctic region, and the sultry Poison Ivy, a botanical femme fatale. As the Dynamic Duo contend with these bad guys, a third hero, Batgirl, joins the ranks of the city's crime-fighters.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Welcome to the neon-soaked, pun-filled fever dream of Gotham. In this 1997 outing, the Dynamic Duo—now joined by Batgirl—must stop Mr. Freeze from turning the city into a giant ice cube, all while dealing with the pheromone-fueled antics of Poison Ivy and her muscle-bound sidekick, Bane. It is a film that trades the shadows of the earlier movies for a campy, toy-commercial aesthetic, complete with Bat-skates and some of the most baffling costume choices in superhero history. THE PROS Look, if you go in expecting a sincere, gritty detective story, you’re in the wrong place, but as a piece of campy spectacle, it’s a win. The production design is a celebratory explosion of neon and oversized statues that feels like a comic book come to life. Uma Thurman is a total belter as Poison Ivy; she leans into the theatricality with such gusto that she steals every scene she’s in. It is a visually striking movie that doesn't take itself seriously for a single second, making it a decent choice for a "so bad it's good" movie night with a few mates and some cold drinks. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because it is a bit of a Stay Clear for anyone who likes their Batman with a bit of dignity. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze is essentially a walking pun-generator, and while some are funny, after the fiftieth "ice to meet you," it gets a bit wet. The plot is a massive head-scratcher that prioritises spectacle over logic, and the introduction of Bat-nipples on the suits remains one of the most questionable creative decisions in cinema. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Cool Suits: The Mr. Freeze suit was so heavy and cumbersome that Arnold Schwarzenegger could only wear it for short bursts, and the blue LED lights inside his mouth actually leaked battery acid on several occasions, which is a bit of a health hazard.• Suit Snip: George Clooney famously joked that he killed the franchise, but he also kept one of the "Bat-nipple" suits as a memento to remind himself never to take a role solely for the paycheck again.• Bane’s Build: The actor playing Bane, Jeep Swenson, was a professional wrestler; his costume was so tight and the mask so restrictive that he had to be hooked up to oxygen tanks between takes just to keep going.
