Overview

Four years after defeating The Grabber, Finney Blake is struggling with life after captivity. When his younger sister Gwen begins receiving calls in her dreams from the Black Phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp, the siblings become determined to solve the mystery and confront a killer who has grown more powerful in death and more significant to them than either could imagine.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Ethan Hawke returns as The Grabber in this direct sequel to the 2021 horror hit. Despite his apparent demise in the first part, the story dives into a supernatural "expansion" of the black phone’s lore. We find Finney and Gwen trying to move on with their lives, but the ringing starts again. It turns out the basement wasn't the only place with a connection to the other side, and a new wave of disappearances suggests The Grabber’s influence has become something far more parasitic. It’s a dark, atmospheric follow-up that tries to bridge the gap between a standard slasher and a full-blown ghost story. THE PROS Ethan Hawke is still the best thing about this franchise, bringing a menacing, erratic energy that makes your skin crawl every time the mask appears. Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw are fantastic as the returning siblings, making their shared trauma and bond feel incredibly sincere and grounded. It’s a 7/10 because the cinematography perfectly captures that grim, 1970s suburban aesthetic that made the first one so effective. The supernatural elements are handled with a clever touch, expanding the "rules" of the phone without making it feel like a totally different movie. There are some genuinely gripping sequences in the final part that deliver on the tension and the scares. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the "return" of the villain requires a bit of a leap of faith that might not sit right with fans who liked the finality of the original ending. The middle part is quite sluggish, spending a lot of time on dream sequences and lore-dumping that slows down the actual plot. It misses a higher mark because some of the new child characters aren't nearly as well-developed as the original cast, making their stakes feel a bit lower. At times, the script leans a little too heavily on "jump scares" rather than the slow-burn dread that made the first film a standout. THE VERDICT A 7/10. A solid, spooky sequel that manages to justify its existence thanks to the top-tier performances from the lead cast. It’s a winner for fans of Joe Hill’s original concept who want more of that specific, grim atmosphere. While it doesn't quite reach the "epic status" of the first film, it’s a sincere effort that expands the world in an interesting way.
