Overview

One year after his heroics in Los Angeles, John McClane is an off-duty cop who is the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. On a snowy Christmas Eve, as he waits for his wife's plane to land at Washington Dulles International Airport, terrorists take over the air traffic control system in a plot to free a South American army general and drug smuggler being flown into the US to face drug charges. It's now up to McClane to take on the terrorists, while coping with an inept airport police chief, an uncooperative anti-terrorist squad, and the life of his wife and everyone else trapped in planes circling overhead.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY How can the same thing happen to the same bloke twice? John McClane is waiting for his wife’s plane to land at a snowy Dulles International Airport on Christmas Eve when a group of rogue military types seize control of the systems. They’ve shut down the runways and are holding thousands of passengers hostage in the air until their demands are met. McClane is forced to crawl through vents and sprint across frozen runways to stop the terrorists before the planes start falling out of the sky. It is a bigger, colder, and much more explosive follow-up to the original masterpiece. THE PROS The tension is a absolute win, especially the ticking-clock element of the planes circling overhead with dwindling fuel. Renny Harlin takes over the director’s chair and cranks the action up to eleven, giving us iconic moments like the ejector seat escape and the final showdown on the wing of a moving Boeing 747. Bruce Willis is in top form, leaning into the "wrong man in the wrong place" grit that makes McClane so relatable. It is a celebratory explosion of 90s action cinema that manages to keep the spirit of the first film alive while scaling up the stakes for a massive airport setting. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because it follows the original "blueprint" a bit too closely at times, making some beats feel like a bit of a remix rather than a fresh idea. The logic takes a bit of a hit—it is a total head-scratcher why the planes couldn't just divert to another nearby airport once they realised Dulles was compromised. Some of the supporting characters, particularly the airport police chief, are a bit wet and exist purely to shout at McClane and get in his way. It misses the 9/10 status because it lacks that tight, claustrophobic perfection of the Nakatomi Plaza setting. THE VERDICT An 8/10. This is a good film and a genuine, high-octane belter that proves lightning can indeed strike twice. It is a vault essential for the Christmas holidays and a sincere treat for anyone who loves a gritty hero who just wants to go home. Go and watch it for the witty one-liners and the sheer scale of the chaos—it is the business when it comes to old-school action sequels. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Cold Comfort: Despite the film being set in a blizzard, the production suffered through a massive heatwave in Denver; they had to fly in tonnes of crushed ice and use chemical "snow" to keep the actors from looking like they were melting.• Expensive Explosion: The final explosion of the plane was the most expensive stunt in cinema history at the time, filmed with several remote cameras to ensure they caught every second of the multi-million dollar blast.• Brand Rivalry: Black & Decker famously sued the studio after a scene featuring one of their drills was cut from the final film; they had paid a tidy sum for the product placement and were not happy about being left on the cutting room floor. THE VIBE Like a freezing winter night at a busy terminal, the smell of jet fuel and pine needles, and the sound of a radio crackling with bad news. It is tense, chilly, and incredibly satisfying. It makes you want to check the weather forecast, pack some extra ammunition, and never, ever fly on Christmas Eve.
