    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Released in 2023, this post-apocalyptic thriller follows the unlikely pairing of Claire, a privileged young woman completely out of her depth, and Freddie, a grizzled retired soldier. Together, they attempt to navigate a Los Angeles that has been decimated by a deadly pandemic and overrun by the "flesh-hungry undead." It is a classic road-trip survival story that sees the duo facing off against brutal gangs, cannibals, and creepy cults. While it hits many familiar zombie tropes, it tries to ground itself in a more serious, gritty father-daughter dynamic as Freddie teaches Claire the harsh skills needed to survive the new world. THE PROS The film is a win when it comes to character development; the evolving bond between Freddie (Craig Stark) and Claire (Jamie Bernadette) feels sincere and gives the story a much-needed heart. Craig Stark is a total belter as the weary mercenary, bringing a rugged authenticity to the role that elevates the material. For a lower-budget production, the use of practical effects and actual location filming is a celebratory explosion of old-school filmmaking that looks much better than cheap CGI. It’s a sincere attempt to tell a human story amidst the typical zombie carnage. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because, despite its best efforts, it is a bit wet in the pacing department. At nearly two hours, it frequently drags, with some of the cultist subplots feeling a tad redundant and like a head-scratcher in terms of the overall narrative. The dialogue can occasionally lean into the "melodramatic," and some of the supporting performances aren't quite as sharp as the leads. It misses the 7/10 mark because the final act tends to wander off into "pretentious" territory, losing the tight survivalist focus that made the first half work. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Decent—it’s not bad, but it’s definitely not a "highly recommended" must-watch. It’s a vault essential only for hardcore zombie fans who appreciate a gritty, low-budget effort over a shiny Hollywood blockbuster.
