⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY The two biggest heavyweights in cinema history finally square off in a neon-soaked grudge match. Kong has grown a bit of a beard and is being kept in a massive biodome until some scientists decide to use him as a GPS to find a secret power source in the "Hollow Earth." Meanwhile, Godzilla has gone rogue and is smashing up tech labs because he smells a rat. When the lizard and the monkey meet in the middle of the ocean, it’s a celebratory explosion of scales and fur. It all builds to a massive scrap in Hong Kong that features a very "heavy metal" surprise guest. THE PROS This is a win for anyone who is sick of human drama and just wants to see a giant gorilla punch a radioactive lizard in the face. The fight choreography is epic status; the way they use the city as a playground is punchy and brilliantly filmed. Kong is the sincere heart of the movie—he’s got more personality than most of the human cast, especially with his little bond with a deaf girl named Jia. It’s a good movie because it stops trying to be a dark, moody tragedy and embraces the fact that it's a massive, colorful monster brawl. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the human sub-plots are a bit of a head-scratcher. Millie Bobby Brown’s "Scooby-Doo" investigation team feels a sincere bit sluggish and mostly exists to explain the plot to people who aren't paying attention. It misses the 9/10 mark because the physics are a bit "video gamey"—Kong can jump off a skyscraper like it’s a trampoline—which takes some of the grit out of it. Also, the "Hollow Earth" stuff is a bit of a reach, even for a movie about a 300-foot lizard. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a total recommendation for a loud Saturday night. It’s a vault essential for the pure spectacle and the neon-lit visuals. Go and watch it for the aircraft carrier fight and the final tag-team match—it’s a belter. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Size Matters: To make the fight fair, Kong had to be scaled up massively from his appearance in *Skull Island*. He went from roughly 100 feet tall to over 330 feet just so he could look Godzilla in the eye without a stepladder.• King Kong’s Inspiration: The animators studied silverback gorillas, obviously, but they also took inspiration from aging action stars like Bruce Willis in *Die Hard* to give Kong that "world-weary" fighter vibe.• No Winner?: Director Adam Wingard insisted there had to be a definitive winner. He hated how the original 1962 version was ambiguous, so he made sure one monster clearly walked away with the W this time. THE VIBE Like a heavy metal concert in a neon arcade. It smells like sea salt, ozone, and burnt electronics. It makes you want to pick a side, buy a massive TV, and realize that sometimes the best way to solve a problem is just a massive right hook.
