⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY After a six-year hiatus and the end of the Cold War, Bond returned to prove he wasn't just a "sexist, misogynist dinosaur." The story kicks off with a spectacular heist of the GoldenEye satellite weapon by a mysterious syndicate known as Janus. 007 heads to Russia, where he discovers the villain is someone from his own past with a deeply personal vendetta. It is a sleek, high-stakes thriller that perfectly balances old-school spy charm with 90s grit, introducing us to a more vulnerable yet equally lethal Bond. THE PROS Pierce Brosnan’s debut is a win of massive proportions; he stepped into the role with a sincere confidence that immediately silenced the skeptics. Sean Bean as Alec Trevelyan is a total belter, providing one of the few villains who can actually match Bond’s skill set and psychological depth. Famke Janssen’s Xenia Onatopp is a legendary, terrifying addition to the franchise, bringing a lethal energy that is genuinely memorable. The opening dam jump remains a sincere masterpiece of practical stunt work, and the tank chase through St. Petersburg is a celebratory explosion of practical chaos that defines the era. THE CONS It earns a 9/10 because, while it is an outstanding film, the mid-90s synth score by Éric Serra can be a bit of a head-scratcher—it lacks the classic orchestral sweep that many associate with 007. Some of the computer hacking scenes look a bit wet and dated today, feeling very "1995" in a way that pulls you out of the tension slightly.
