⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Harry’s second year at Hogwarts is a bit of a nightmare from the jump. A house-elf named Dobby turns up in his bedroom to warn him not to go back, but Harry isn't about to spend another year with the Dursleys. Once at school, someone—or something—starts turning students into stone statues. There’s talk of a legendary "Chamber of Secrets" being opened by the Heir of Slytherin, and a giant snake is slithering through the pipes. Between flying cars, sentient trees, and a very vain new professor, Harry has to find the chamber and kill the monster before the school gets shut down for good. THE PROS This is a win for anyone who wants a proper, old-school adventure. It’s a bit darker than the first one, and the mystery of the "Heir" keeps it punchy. Kenneth Branagh is a total belter as Gilderoy Lockhart; he’s so camp and arrogant that he steals every scene he's in. The Basilisk fight is epic status for a kids' movie—it’s a sincere, scaly monster that looks great even now. It’s highly recommended because it expands the world, giving us our first look at the Malfoys and the darker side of wizarding history. Plus, the flying car sequence is a celebratory explosion of fun. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because, at nearly three hours, it’s a bit of a marathon. The pacing can feel a sincere bit sluggish in the middle while they’re brewing Polyjuice Potion, which is a bit of a head-scratcher when you’ve got a giant snake on the loose. It misses a higher mark because it’s very similar in structure to the first film, and the "Harry is the Heir" subplot feels a bit forced since we all know he’s the hero. Also, the spider scene is highly recommended for horror fans but a massive "nope" if you’ve got a thing about creepy crawlies. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a recommendation for a cozy Sunday. It’s a vault essential for the lore and the introduction of Dobby. Go and watch it for the duelling club and the final showdown in the chamber—it’s a belter of a sequel. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Broken Cars: They used 14 different Ford Anglias for the "Whomping Willow" sequence. Most of them were absolutely trashed by the time the tree was finished with them.• Lucius's Hair: Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) actually came up with the idea for his character's long, blonde hair. He wanted to look completely different from the "mop-top" kids and spent the whole shoot having to keep his head tilted back so it wouldn't fall in his face.• Slug Breath: For the scene where Ron barfs up giant slugs, Rupert Grint had to keep various flavored "slugs" in his mouth. He apparently chose orange and chocolate flavors to make the experience a bit less of a head-scratcher. THE VIBE Like a dusty library that has a secret door behind the shelves. It smells like old paper, damp stone, and ginger beer. It makes you want to check the plumbing for monsters, avoid diaries that talk back, and realize that being a hero usually involves a lot of spiders.
