If you were handing out medals for surviving bizarre childhoods, Emma Watson would be right up there with actual royalty and anyone who had to grow up with Noel's House Party. Before she'd even reached double digits, she landed a role that would shape the rest of her life. Most kids spend their school years worrying about homework and PE lessons. Emma spent hers dodging paparazzi, attending premieres and helping to steer one of the biggest film franchises in history.
For millions of people, she will forever be Hermione Granger, the brightest witch of her age and, let's be honest, the only reason Harry and Ron made it out of Hogwarts alive. While one was busy attracting dark wizards like a magnet and the other was mainly providing comic relief, Hermione was the one actually doing the reading, solving the puzzles and preventing everyone from being expelled—or worse. Across eight films, Emma managed to turn what could have been an annoying know-it-all into one of cinema's most beloved characters and an entire generation suddenly realised that being clever was actually something to celebrate.
When the Harry Potter films ended, plenty of people expected her to simply cash the cheques and spend the next twenty years attending conventions. Emma, however, had other plans. She carefully picked projects that interested her, showing off completely different sides to her acting in films like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, where she proved she could do spoilt and shallow almost frighteningly well. She later stepped into Belle's famous yellow dress for Disney's Beauty and the Beast, helping turn the film into yet another box office giant.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about Emma Watson is that she never seems particularly interested in being famous for the sake of it. While Hollywood often feels like one giant attention-seeking competition, she's happily stepped away from the endless publicity circus to focus on things that genuinely matter to her. Higher education, directing, sustainability and activism all seem to excite her far more than another red carpet.
Which, in fairness, feels very Hermione. She really did turn out exactly as everyone hoped she would.
• Emma auditioned eight times for the role of Hermione Granger despite having no professional acting experience. J.K. Rowling was reportedly convinced she was perfect almost immediately, but the process continued to make sure the young actress could handle the pressure. Safe to say it worked out alright.
• When she attended Brown University in America, Emma worried her fame would ruin any chance of a normal student life. Amazingly, her classmates treated her like everyone else, and she later revealed nobody ever asked her for an autograph on campus. Which might be the most unbelievable thing in this entire biography.
• Away from films, Emma became a certified yoga and meditation instructor. Considering she spent her childhood under a level of scrutiny that would make most people want to hide under the duvet, finding ways to stay sane seems entirely understandable.
Emma Watson is an absolute class act. Plenty of child stars have struggled under the weight of fame, but she somehow emerged from the madness with intelligence, humour and her feet firmly on the ground. Whether she's acting, campaigning or quietly disappearing from Hollywood for a bit, she always gives off the impression that she's got her priorities sorted. And honestly, Hermione Granger herself would probably be very proud.
