Overview

As Lord Voldemort tightens his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds, Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven. Harry suspects perils may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemorts defenses and to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information. Even as the decisive showdown looms, romance blossoms for Harry, Ron, Hermione and their classmates. Love is in the air, but danger lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the wizarding and Muggle worlds, and Hogwarts isn't the safe haven it used to be. Harry finds an old textbook belonging to the mysterious "Half-Blood Prince" that turns him into a potions genius, while Dumbledore takes him on a trip down memory lane to study Voldemort's past. Between dodging Death Eaters and trying to figure out what Draco Malfoy is up to in the Room of Requirement, the gang is also dealing with a celebratory explosion of teenage hormones. It all leads to a dark, stormy night on the Astronomy Tower that changes everything forever. THE PROS This is a win for the cinematography alone; it’s easily the most beautiful looking film in the series, with all those moody greys and sepia tones. Jim Broadbent is a total belter as Professor Slughorn—he brings a sincere mix of comedy and hidden guilt that’s brilliant to watch. The chemistry between the main trio is punchy and funny, especially with Ron getting "love potioned." It’s highly recommended because it balances the goofy school romance with some of the darkest lore in the franchise, like the eerie cave sequence which is pure epic status horror. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the pacing can feel a sincere bit sluggish—it spends a lot of time on who’s dating who, which is a bit of a head-scratcher when you know the world is literally ending. It misses a higher mark because it cuts out a lot of the cool Voldemort backstory from the book to make room for more teenage snogging. If you’re here for the action, the ending can feel a bit of a damp squib since the "Big Battle" from the books was mostly stripped back to keep the focus on the tower. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a recommendation for anyone who likes a bit of heart with their heartbreak. It’s a vault essential for that final, devastating twist. Go and watch it for Slughorn’s dinner party and the Liquid Luck scene—it’s a belter. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • No Fire: The scene where the Burrow is attacked by Death Eaters wasn't actually in the book. The filmmakers added it because they felt the middle of the movie needed a punchy action sequence to remind everyone that a war was actually happening. • Maggie Smith’s Bravery: Dame Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall) was actually battling breast cancer while filming. She underwent chemotherapy during production but refused to stop working, proving she’s even tougher than her character. • Young Voldemort: The boy who plays 11-year-old Tom Riddle is actually Hero Fiennes Tiffin, the nephew of Ralph Fiennes (who plays adult Voldemort). The director cast him because he looked like a young Ralph, but also because he had a "dark and moody" quality that was perfect. THE VIBE Like a thunderstorm brewing over a posh boarding school. It smells like old parchment, expensive sherry, and burnt wood. It makes you want to brew a potion, watch your back in the corridors, and realize that even the greatest wizards can't live forever.
