Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Harry Potter is an ordinary eleven-year-old boy living under a stairs until he discovers he’s actually a famous wizard. Rescued from his awful aunt and uncle by a giant on a flying motorbike, Harry heads to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Alongside his new mates Ron and Hermione, he navigates moving staircases, magic lessons, and a three-headed dog. The trio quickly realizes that something dangerous is hidden within the school, and Harry must face the dark wizard who killed his parents to protect a legendary stone that grants eternal life. THE PROS The casting is a total winner, especially the late Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid and Alan Rickman as the moody Professor Snape. It’s an 8/10 because the world-building is pure quality; from the first time we see Diagon Alley to the Great Hall, it feels like a genuine place you’d want to live in. John Williams’ score is epic status and instantly recognizable, making every scene feel punchy and magical. The chemistry between the young leads is sincere, and you can see them growing into their roles right in front of you. It’s a winner for the cozy, nostalgic vibe it creates, perfectly capturing the wonder of discovering magic for the first time. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because some of the early CGI—especially the mountain troll and the Centaur—looks a bit quality-deficient by today’s standards and feels a bit like a damp squib. At 152 minutes, the middle part can feel a little sluggish, particularly during the lengthy explanations of wizarding rules. It misses a 9/10 mark because some of the child acting in the first part is a bit stiff, though they definitely get better as the movie goes on. The final confrontation feels a bit rushed compared to the slow build-up of the rest of the film, making the climax feel slightly less gripping than the mystery that leads up to it. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and highly recommended for a family night in. It’s a winner for its charm and for launching one of the most successful franchises in history. Go and watch it to see where the journey started—it’s quality cinema that still holds its magic decades later. This remains a highly anticipated re-watch every time the weather turns cold. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The Floating Candles: In the first part of the film, the floating candles in the Great Hall were actually real candles suspended by wires. However, the heat from the flames eventually started burning through the wires, causing candles to fall onto the tables, so they switched to digital effects for the later movies.• No Green Eyes: In the books, Harry has bright green eyes, but Daniel Radcliffe had a terrible allergic reaction to the coloured contact lenses. After seeing how much he suffered, J.K. Rowling gave the production her blessing to keep his eyes blue, saying the acting was more important than the color.• The Giant Chess Set: The wizard's chess scene wasn't just camera tricks. The production built massive, radio-controlled versions of the pieces that actually moved and exploded on set to make the kids' reactions feel more sincere and honest. THE VIBE Like a warm hot chocolate on a rainy Tuesday. It smells like old parchment, woodsmoke, and pumpkin pasties.
