⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Two young Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton, knock on the door of Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), hoping to share their faith. What starts as a polite conversation over a blueberry pie quickly turns into a lethal psychological trap. Reed isn't interested in a conversion; he wants to put their beliefs through a series of twisted, intellectual tests inside his labyrinthine house. It’s a sharp, claustrophobic thriller that trades typical slasher tropes for a high-stakes debate about religion, control, and survival. THE PROS Hugh Grant is the standout here, ditching his usual rom-com charm for a performance that is genuinely creepy and deeply cynical. He plays Reed with a dry, academic wit that makes the character’s cruelty feel all the more grounded. It hits an 8 because the tension is built slowly and effectively, using the geography of the house to make you feel as trapped as the two sisters. The dialogue is top-tier; it’s rare to see a horror film that is this smart and willing to engage in a complex argument about faith. It’s a gritty, uncomfortable watch that stays with you because it challenges how you think as much as it scares you. THE CONS The final act takes a turn into more traditional "horror movie" territory that doesn't quite match the brilliance of the psychological buildup. It stays at an 8 because some of the logic regarding the house’s "tests" feels a bit convenient for the plot, stretching the reality of the situation. It misses a higher score because the pacing can feel a bit talky for those wanting more immediate scares, and the ending leaves a few interesting threads dangling in favor of a quicker resolution. THE VERDICT 8/10. A smart, gritty, and incredibly well-acted thriller. It’s an honest look at the darker side of belief and a brilliant showcase for Hugh Grant’s range. If you want a horror that actually uses its brain, this is a fair shout. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To keep the tension real for the actors, the interior of the house was built as a cohesive set, allowing the cast to actually walk through the maze-like corridors and feel the isolation of the environment. • The directors, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, were also the writers of 'A Quiet Place', and they used that same focus on sound and atmosphere to make the creaks and whispers of the house feel threatening. • Hugh Grant reportedly did extensive research into the history of religions and cult leaders to help craft Reed’s specific, condescending way of breaking down the sisters' faith. THE VIBE Like the smell of a candle that’s just been blown out. It feels like cold stone underfoot and the metallic tang of a heavy, locking deadbolt.
