⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY In a world crippled by an ecological collapse that forces world leaders to reduce the population by 20%, a wealthy retired newsman invites his grown children to dinner to announce his enrollment in the government’s new euthanasia program. When his plan goes sideways and a cynical government official (Enrico Colantoni) arrives to collect a quota of two family members, the evening devolves into a gritty, visceral battle for survival. The siblings must decide which among them will die so the others can live, exposing deep-seated resentments in a pained, claustrophobic satire. THE PROS The film is a fair shout for fans of dark, cynical social commentary. It hits a 6 because the premise is a punchy, uncomfortable look at class and self-preservation that feels all too honest. Jay Baruchel and Emily Hampshire deliver sincere performances as siblings who quickly drop their moral facades when their own lives are on the line. The single-location setting creates a pained sense of dread, and Enrico Colantoni is a total highlight as the bored, bureaucratic agent of death who treats the family’s collapse like a standard day at the office. It’s an honest attempt at a high-concept thriller that doesn't shy away from the messier parts of human nature. THE CONS It stays at a 6 because the script eventually falls into some predictable "rich people behaving badly" tropes that feel a bit pained. It misses a higher mark because the transition from a sharp social satire to a more traditional slasher-style thriller in the final act is a bit of a head-scratcher, losing some of its intellectual edge for the sake of visceral violence. The pacing can feel a touch like a slog in the middle as the arguments loop, and some of the characters are so unlikable it becomes a pained challenge to care who actually makes it out. While the grit is there, it lacks the epic scale or truly clever twists needed to elevate it above a mid-tier genre flick. THE VERDICT 6/10. A gritty, pained, and mean-spirited satire that offers a visceral look at the end of the world. It’s an honest one-time watch for those who like their horror served with a side of class warfare.
