⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 THE SUMMARY Paranormal investigator Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) faces her most personal haunting yet when she gets a call about a disturbance in her childhood home in New Mexico. Returning to the house where her own terrifying gifts first manifested, she has to confront the literal and figurative demons of her past. Alongside her sidekicks Specs and Tucker, Elise goes deep into the family archives to face "KeyFace"—a creature that feeds on fear and locks away the voices of its victims. It’s a dive into the origin story of the franchise’s heart, showing how a young girl with a "curse" became the protector we know. THE PROS Lin Shaye is, as always, the absolute star of the show. She brings a sincere, emotional weight to Elise that keeps the movie grounded even when the plot gets a bit messy. It hits a 5 because the exploration of her tragic childhood—dealing with an abusive father and the discovery of her powers—is actually quite gritty and well-handled. The design of the main entity, KeyFace, is effectively creepy, using his keys for fingers to "silence" people in a way that’s visually striking. There are a few honest jump scares in the first half that will definitely make you spill your popcorn, maintaining that classic Wan-inspired tension. THE CONS The "Insidious" formula is starting to feel a bit thin here. It stays at a 5 because the humor provided by Specs and Tucker, which usually provides a nice break from the horror, feels a bit forced and out of place given the heavy themes of child abuse. It misses a higher mark because the third act becomes a bit of a convoluted mess, relying on "The Further" logic that feels more like a fantasy quest than a terrifying supernatural thriller. By this fourth installment, the scares have become somewhat predictable, and the connection to the first film feels a bit like a "head scratcher" that was tacked on just to close the loop. THE VERDICT 5/10. An honest effort that works better as a character study for Elise than as a standalone horror. It’s a fair shout for fans who want to see the franchise's backstory completed, but it lacks the genuine dread and punch of the original chapters.
