⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Jennifer’s Body is what happens when a high-school horror film stops pretending teenagers are quirky little sitcom characters and starts treating them like emotionally unstable gremlins running on hormones, jealousy, insecurity, and terrible decision-making. Megan Fox plays Jennifer, a popular cheerleader who survives a satanic ritual very, very incorrectly and comes back… hungry. Specifically for teenage boys. Meanwhile her best friend Needy slowly realises her glamorous mate has transformed into a literal flesh-eating nightmare wrapped in lip gloss and low-rise jeans. It’s funny, vicious, weirdly sad, and far smarter than people gave it credit for at the time. THE PROS Megan Fox absolutely cooks here. The film works because she leans fully into Jennifer’s mix of confidence, cruelty, insecurity, and monstrous hunger without ever turning her into a one-note villain. Amanda Seyfried is brilliant too, playing Needy with this permanently anxious energy like she’s two minor inconveniences away from collapse. Diablo Cody’s script is packed with sharp dialogue that somehow swings between hilarious and deeply uncomfortable in seconds. Karyn Kusama directs the horror with a proper grimy edge too—this isn’t polished vampire romance nonsense, it’s sticky, bloody, awkward body horror where everything feels sweaty and emotionally dangerous. The soundtrack is peak late-2000s chaos in the best possible way. THE CONS It lands at an 8/10 because the film occasionally disappears too far into its own stylised weirdness. Some emotional beats get buried under the sarcasm and hyperactive dialogue, and a few supporting characters exist purely to become monster snacks. It also suffered massively from confused marketing that tried selling it as “hot demon Megan Fox eats boys lol” instead of the darker, smarter horror-comedy it actually is. It misses the 9/10 mark because despite becoming a cult classic, parts of the third act still feel slightly undercooked compared to the razor-sharp setup. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A genuinely clever horror-comedy that aged far better than half the “serious” films released around it. Underneath the blood and chaos, it’s really about toxic friendships, loneliness, female rage, and the horrifying experience of being a teenager in general. Funny, messy, tragic, and occasionally disgusting. Basically high school in a nutshell. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Karyn Kusama reportedly fought hard to keep the film’s darker emotional tone intact after early studio notes pushed for something more like a generic teen sex comedy.• Megan Fox later admitted this was one of the few projects where she genuinely felt understood as a performer rather than just being used as “the hot girl in slow motion.”• The infamous pool scene was filmed in freezing temperatures, with cast members reportedly wrapped in blankets between nearly every take trying not to turn blue.• Diablo Cody intentionally wrote Jennifer and Needy’s dialogue to sound slightly exhausting and overly intense because she wanted it to capture how teenage friendships can feel like emotional warfare.• The film massively exploded in popularity years later through online reappraisal, with many critics openly admitting they completely misjudged it on release thanks to the disastrous marketing campaign.
