⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Todd Phillips ditched the CGI capes and cosmic portals to give us a gritty, 70s-style character study that feels more like *Taxi Driver* than a DC flick. Joaquin Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a struggling clown and aspiring stand-up comedian living with his mother in a decaying Gotham City. As society continues to kick him while he’s down and his mental health spirals, Arthur begins a slow-burn descent into madness, eventually transforming into the iconic symbol of chaos. It’s a bleak, unsettling look at how a "bad day" can break a man, set against a city that’s literally rotting from the inside out. THE PROS Joaquin Phoenix is a total winner here; his performance is sincere, haunting, and physically transformative. The way he moves and that uncontrollable, painful laugh is a legendary bit of acting that earned him every award on the planet. It earns an 8/10 because the cinematography and production design are high-quality, perfectly capturing a Gotham that feels honest and lived-in. The score by Hildur Guðnadóttir is the absolute business, using heavy cello notes to create an atmosphere of dread that builds perfectly alongside Arthur’s rage. It’s a high-quality achievement because it proved that "superhero" stories could be mature, grounded, and deeply uncomfortable without needing a single explosion. THE CONS It misses the "epic status" 9 or 10 because, for all its grit, it leans very heavily on its influences. At times, the homages to Scorsese are so on the nose they feel a bit quality-deficient in originality. The middle part is a bit of a slow-roller and can feel slightly sluggish as it hits the same "Arthur gets bullied" beat multiple times. It lands an 8 because the final act, while legendary, feels a touch detached from the grounded character study that came before it, turning into more of a standard "riot" finale. Some of the dialogue is a bit of a head-scratcher and lacks the sharp wit of a truly perfect script. THE VERDICT An 8/10.
