⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Twelve years after his last outing, John McClane returns to prove that an old-school copper is the only thing standing between a high-tech terrorist and total national collapse. This time, the threat isn't a building or an airport, but a "fire sale"—a coordinated cyber-attack designed to shut down the entire US infrastructure. McClane has to team up with a young hacker to track down a disgruntled tech genius who has decided to delete the country. It is a brilliant clash of "analog vs digital" that proves a well-placed fist is often more effective than a keyboard. THE PROS The action set-pieces are a absolute win and some of the most creative in the whole franchise. Whether it is McClane "killing" a helicopter with a car or the final showdown involving a fighter jet on a motorway, the spectacle is top-notch. Justin Long is surprisingly good as the reluctant sidekick, providing a witty, nervous energy that balances out Bruce Willis’s grumpy, world-weary grit. It manages to feel like a modern, high-stakes thriller while keeping the core DNA of what makes McClane great: he is still the bloke who is tired, bleeding, and doing the right thing because nobody else is capable of it. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because it is definitely the moment the series pushes the "invincibility" of McClane a bit too far. While the stunts are a celebratory explosion of fun, they move away from the grounded reality of the first film and into the world of superhero logic. The villain, while played with a cool, clinical menace by Timothy Olyphant, lacks that personal, legendary spark that Hans Gruber brought to the table. It is a good film, but it misses the 9/10 status because it occasionally feels a bit too polished and sanitised compared to the gritty, R-rated origins of the character. THE VERDICT An 8/10. This is a good film and a genuine, high-octane belter that successfully brought the franchise into the 21st century. It is the business for anyone who loves a loud, well-paced action flick that doesn't take itself too seriously. Go and watch it if you want to see why Bruce Willis is the king of the "wrong man in the wrong place" trope. It is a vault essential that remains a solid, highly entertaining chapter in the saga. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Serious Scars: During the filming of the massive fight scene with Maggie Q, Bruce Willis took a real kick to the head that required twenty-eight stitches—a sincere reminder that the man does a fair share of his own rough stuff.• The Stunt of a Lifetime: That incredible scene where a car is launched into a helicopter was actually done for real using a high-speed cable and a stunt pilot, with very minimal CGI used to touch up the final shot.• Daughter’s Debut: Before Mary Elizabeth Winstead was cast as Lucy McClane, several famous names like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson reportedly auditioned for the role as the studio wanted to capitalise on a big pop star name. THE VIBE Like a massive power cut in a big city, the smell of burnt rubber and overheating servers, and the sound of a very old-fashioned bloke shouting at a computer. It is fast, loud, and incredibly satisfying. It makes you want to throw your smartphone in the bin and buy a heavy-duty vest.
