⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY This New Zealand indie thriller is a high-quality masterclass in building tension from absolutely nothing. Ian, a man suffering from severe anxiety and on the verge of a breakdown, decides to hike a remote "loop track" in the bush to clear his head. He soon becomes convinced that someone—or something—is following him. As he meets other hikers along the way, his paranoia clashes with their easy-going nature, leaving the audience wondering if he’s losing his mind or if there’s a legendary threat lurking in the trees. It’s an honest, slow-burn psychological trip that rewards your patience with one of the most talked-about finales of the year. THE PROS This earns its 8/10 because it uses its low budget in a way that is absolute quality. Thomas Sainsbury is a total winner in the lead role; he perfectly captures the physical and mental exhaustion of someone struggling with a panic disorder, making his fear feel sincere and grounded. It hits the 8/10 mark because the direction is legendary, using the dense New Zealand bush to create a sense of claustrophobia even in wide-open spaces. The sound design is a total banger—every snap of a twig or rustle of a leaf keeps you on edge. It’s an honest shout for fans who like "is he crazy or not?" mysteries, and when the film finally reveals its hand, it’s a high-quality payoff that you won't see coming. THE CONS It misses the "epic status" marks because the first two acts are a very deliberate slow-roller. The cast and crew had to hike in their equipment to some of the high-quality, remote spots to ensure the isolation felt legendary on screen.• Final Reveal: To maintain the high-quality mystery, the director kept the details of the ending a secret from much of the cast during the early stages of filming. This helped the other actors give an honest, skeptical reaction to the lead character's growing paranoia. THE VIBE Like the feeling of being watched when you’re completely alone. It smells of damp ferns, old hiking boots, and the metallic tang of cold sweat.
