Set in 19th-century Germany, the story follows a pained young woman, Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), and the ancient Transylvanian vampire, Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård), who is obsessed with her. As Orlok leaves a trail of plague and grit across Europe to find her, the film descends into a gothic nightmare of shadows and blood. It’s a sincere, visceral horror that abandons modern jump scares for a lingering, atmospheric dread that feels like a fever dream from another century. THE PROS This is an absolute win for gothic horror purists.
