⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY The sleepy town of Woodsboro is being terrorized by Ghostface, a masked killer with a sincere obsession with horror movie tropes. High schooler Sidney Prescott finds herself at the center of the carnage exactly one year after her mother’s murder. As her friends are picked off one by one, the survivors have to follow the "rules" of the genre to stay alive. It’s a meta-masterpiece that deconstructs the slasher flick while being a total belter of a scary movie itself, turning the "caller is inside the house" trope on its head. THE PROS This film is a win for reinventing a dying genre. Wes Craven’s direction is an absolute standout, balancing genuine terror with a celebratory explosion of sharp, self-aware wit. The opening scene with Drew Barrymore is a total belter—arguably one of the most iconic sequences in cinema history—that immediately tells the audience nobody is safe. Neve Campbell brings a sincere, gritty strength to the "final girl" role, and Matthew Lillard’s manic energy in the finale is a masterpiece of unhinged performance. It’s highly recommended for being both a love letter to horror and a brutal dissection of it.
