⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Skyfall is the film that proved Bond could be both a blockbuster action hero and a deeply broken human being. When a hard drive containing the identities of every undercover agent is stolen, and MI6 itself comes under literal fire, a weary Bond must track down Raoul Silva—a vengeful former agent with a very personal grudge against M. It is a sleek, beautiful, and haunting journey that takes us from the rooftops of Istanbul to the neon lights of Shanghai, finally ending in the bleak, foggy highlands of Scotland. It is a celebration of 50 years of 007 that manages to feel entirely modern. THE PROS Javier Bardem as Silva is a win of legendary proportions; he’s flamboyant, terrifying, and possesses a sincere motive that makes him one of the best villains in the entire series. The cinematography by Roger Deakins is a total belter—every frame, from the silhouetted fight in a Shanghai skyscraper to the burning manor in Scotland, looks like a piece of art. Daniel Craig is in top form, playing a Bond who is visibly aging and struggling to keep up with a digital world. It is a celebratory explosion of Bond history that balances high-octane stunts with a genuine, heart-wrenching exploration of M and Bond’s "mother-son" relationship. THE CONS It earns a 9/10 because, while it is an outstanding film, the middle act relies on a "he wanted to get caught" trope that has been used a few too many times in modern cinema.
