⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Barry Levinson’s 1996 crime drama is a heavy-hitting tale of friendship, trauma, and the kind of revenge that leaves everyone a little bit dirty. Set in Hell's Kitchen, the story follows four boys whose lives are derailed after a hot-dog stand prank goes tragically wrong, landing them in a brutal reformatory. Years later, two of them gun down their former tormentor in a public restaurant, sparking a legally preposterous but emotionally gripping courtroom battle where their old friends—now a prosecutor and a writer—conspire to rig the system in their favor. THE PROS The cast is an absolute embarrassment of riches. Kevin Bacon delivers one of the most chilling performances of his career as the sadistic Sean Nokes, while Dustin Hoffman is a sincere standout as a bumbling, shaky defense lawyer. Robert De Niro provides a grounded, moral center as Father Bobby, a priest caught between his vows and his loyalty to "his boys". The film’s ability to evoke the grit of 1960s New York is impeccable, capturing a neighborhood that feels both protective and dangerous. THE CONS The second half leans heavily into "legal fantasy" territory. The idea of a prosecutor intentionally losing his own case while a priest commits perjury on the stand is a total head-scratcher if you’re looking for a realistic courtroom drama.
