⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY On a grimy Halloween night, two friends heading home after a party cross paths with Art the Clown—a silent, black-and-white nightmare who isn’t looking for laughs. What starts as an unsettling encounter in a diner spirals into a depraved game of cat-and-mouse inside a decaying apartment building. Art stalks his prey with a bag of rusty tricks, turning a simple night out into a relentless, stomach-churning gore-fest where no one is safe and there are no rules. THE PROS Art the Clown is the new icon of horror. David Howard Thornton’s performance is a masterclass in physical comedy mixed with pure malice; his silent miming makes the violence feel even more disturbing. It hits a 6 because the practical effects are incredible for such a low-budget flick—it’s an honest throwback to the 80s "splatter" era where every drop of blood felt tactile and gross. It doesn't try to be "elevated horror" or lecture the audience; it’s a gritty, unpretentious slasher that knows exactly what its fans want: creative, over-the-top carnage and a villain you can’t look away from. THE CONS The plot is paper-thin, existing only as a clothesline to hang the next kill on. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • David Howard Thornton, who plays Art, is a trained mime in real life, which is why his movements and facial expressions are so unnervingly precise without him ever making a sound. • The infamous "hacksaw scene" took an entire day to film and used gallons of fake blood; it was so intense that it cemented the film's reputation in the indie horror community almost overnight. • To keep costs down, director Damien Leone did almost all of the special effects makeup himself, using his garage as a workshop to create the gruesome prosthetics seen on screen.
