Overview

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 ​ THE SUMMARY It’s the orange cat you know, but now he’s an action star for some reason. The Garfield Movie ditches the cozy living room and Monday-hating sarcasm for a high-stakes heist involving Garfield's long-lost scruffy dad, Vic. It’s a bright, loud adventure that tries to turn a lazy house cat into Ethan Hunt, with a side order of "daddy issues" lasagna. ​ THE PROS The animation is actually gorgeous—clean, bouncy, and colorful enough to keep a toddler (or a very tired adult) mesmerized. Samuel L. Jackson as Vic is inspired casting; he brings a "street-smart" energy that balances Chris Pratt’s more laid-back Garfield. There are a few flashes of the old-school Emperor’s New Groove style humor thanks to director Mark Dindal, and the heist sequences are fast-paced enough that you won't fall asleep in the theater. ​ THE CONS It feels like a corporate "IP rebrand" rather than a Garfield movie. The charm of Garfield was always that he didn't do anything; putting him in a milk-factory heist feels like a weird fit. Jon Arbuckle is basically a background extra, and the sheer amount of product placement (looking at you, Olive Garden and Walmart) is enough to give you a headache. Also, Chris Pratt just sounds like Chris Pratt—it’s missing that soul-tired, "I-hate-Mondays" rasp we grew up with. ​ THE VERDICT It’s perfectly fine as a "distract the kids for 90 minutes" flick, but die-hard fans of the comic strip might feel like they’re watching a generic heist movie with a Garfield skin applied to it. It’s light, it’s harmless, and it’s about as memorable as a frozen microwave lasagna. ​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Garfield’s actual "birth date" from the 1978 comic strip (June 19, 1978) is hidden all over the movie as an easter egg. It’s the passcode to his phone (061978) and even shows up on a dumpster during a flashback. Also, this is the first time in history a Garfield theatrical film wasn't handled by 20th Century Fox. ​ THE VIBE Like eating a bowl of sugary cereal at 2 AM—fun in the moment, but you’ll probably have a bit of a "why did I do that?" regret once the credits roll.
