⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY If you have been missing the rolling hills of the Shire, this is the ultimate homecoming. An Unexpected Journey kicks off the trilogy by introducing us to a younger, fussier Bilbo Baggins who gets his quiet life upended by a wizard and thirteen hungry dwarves. It is a grand, sweeping introduction that trades the immediate gloom of the original trilogy for a bit more whimsy, gold-hunting, and troll-dodging. It is the start of a massive trek that proves even the smallest person can handle a very large sword. THE PROS Martin Freeman is the absolute business as Bilbo; he brings a dry, nervous wit to the role that makes him instantly relatable to anyone who would rather stay at home with a cup of tea. The sequence in the goblin tunnels is a celebratory explosion of creative action, and the "Riddles in the Dark" scene with Gollum is a sincere masterclass in tension and CGI performance. It is a visually stunning return to Middle-earth that manages to make the world feel vast and full of wonder all over again. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the first hour is a bit of a Languid Burn. While the dinner party at Bag End is charming, it goes on long enough that you might find yourself checking the clock before they even leave the front door. Some of the humour is a bit more childish than the original Lord of the Rings films, and the decision to stretch a relatively short book into three massive films means there is some padding that feels a bit wet and unnecessary. THE VERDICT An 8/10. This is a good film and a sincere treat for anyone who loves high fantasy and top-tier world-building. It is a vault essential that sets the stage perfectly for the adventures to come, even if it takes its sweet time getting out of the Shire. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • High Frame Rate: This was famously the first major blockbuster to be filmed and shown in 48 frames per second, which was so sharp and clear that some viewers complained it made the sets look like they were from a stage play.• Hobbit Hair: The production went through a staggering amount of yak hair to create the wigs and iconic hairy feet for the dwarves and hobbits, with each main character having multiple sets of "feet" for different terrains.• Casting Luck: Martin Freeman was so perfect for the role that Peter Jackson actually shut down production for several weeks to allow the actor to go and film Sherlock, as he refused to cast anyone else as Bilbo.
