⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 3/10 THE SUMMARY Noreno (Lee Partridge) is a half-Roman, half-barbarian soldier tasked with a suicide mission: cross the snowy mountains of Armenia alone to deliver a message to the Roman legions before they are wiped out by the Parthian army. With the fate of two legions hanging in the balance, Noreno has to survive the brutal elements and avoid enemy patrols while dealing with his own internal conflict. It’s a low-budget, gritty survival story that tries to be a historical epic but mostly consists of one man walking through the woods. THE PROS The film at least attempts to tell a smaller, more intimate story within a massive historical conflict. It hits a 3 because the snowy landscapes are occasionally decent to look at, providing a cold, isolated atmosphere that fits the "survival" theme. Mickey Rourke and Casper Van Dien show up for brief cameos, which might provide a quick bit of "hey, I know them" interest for a couple of minutes. It’s an honest effort at a "marathon" style thriller where the clock is the main villain, and some of the physical struggles Noreno faces in the snow feel appropriately miserable. THE CONS It stays at a 3 because it’s a massive slog. For a movie called 'The Legion', there is very little legion and a whole lot of repetitive walking. It misses a higher mark because the budget limitations are painfully obvious—the "battles" feel small and poorly choreographed, and the dialogue is often clunky and delivered with little conviction. The pacing is incredibly sluggish; there’s only so much footage of a man shivering in the snow you can watch before you start checking your watch. It’s caught in that awkward "straight-to-DVD" trap where the ambition far outweighs the execution, leaving you with a film that feels more like a long hike than an epic journey. THE VERDICT 3/10. An honest but dull attempt at a Roman survival flick. It’s a fair shout if you’re a Roman history completionist with a lot of patience, but for everyone else, it’s a bit of a dry run that never quite reaches its destination. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To keep the production moving on a tight budget, the film was shot in various mountainous regions of Spain, which stood in for the rugged terrain of ancient Armenia.• Despite having top billing, Mickey Rourke’s entire performance was filmed in a very short timeframe, mostly in a single location, which is why his character never actually interacts with the main protagonist on the road.• The film is loosely inspired by the real-world Battle of Rhandeia, though it takes massive creative liberties with the actual military tactics and political climate of the time. THE VIBE Like a wet wool blanket on a cold night. It smells of pine needles, damp earth, and the metallic tang of a rusted gladius.
