⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Daisy Ridley stars as Helena, a woman living a seemingly perfect suburban life with a massive secret: she was born and raised in the wilderness by her father, the "Marsh King," who had kidnapped her mother years prior. When her father (Ben Mendelsohn) escapes from prison, Helena’s past comes screaming back, and she has to use every survival skill he taught her to protect her own daughter. It’s a psychological thriller that trades the usual jump scares for a slow-burn tension in the swampy backwoods of Michigan. THE PROS Daisy Ridley is a total winner here; she brings a sincere, haunted energy to Helena that makes you believe in her internal struggle between loving and fearing the man who raised her. Ben Mendelsohn is high-quality as always, playing a villain who is more manipulative and charismatic than a standard monster, which makes their dynamic much more gripping. It earns a 6/10 because the cinematography is top-tier, capturing the beautiful but oppressive nature of the marshlands in a way that feels honest to the story’s grit. The first act, which shows Helena’s childhood in the wild, is a total standout and feels like a legendary survival flick in its own right. THE CONS It lands a 6/10 because the transition into a modern-day thriller feels a bit like a clanger, losing the unique atmosphere of the opening for something much more predictable.
