⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Guy Ritchie takes a swing at World War II with this loud, stylish, and incredibly violent retelling of Operation Postmaster. Henry Cavill stars as Gus March-Phillipps, a rogue military man recruited by a secret committee (including a young Ian Fleming) to lead a team of "ungentlemanly" outcasts on a suicide mission. Their goal is to sink a German supply ship in a neutral Spanish port and cripple the Nazi U-boat fleet. It’s a swaggering, bloody heist movie that trades historical accuracy for pure cinematic adrenaline, featuring a squad of killers who clearly enjoy their work far too much. THE PROS This earns its 9/10 and "Epic Status" because it’s Guy Ritchie firing on all cylinders. Henry Cavill is a total winner here, oozing charm and menace with a beard that deserves its own billing, but it’s Alan Ritchson who nearly steals the show as a Danish killing machine with a penchant for archery and large knives. The chemistry between the squad is high-quality, making the banter feel sincere and unscripted. It’s a 9/10 because the action is genuinely gripping—Ritchie balances his signature fast-cuts with a sprawling, Spaghetti Western vibe that makes every Nazi takedown feel like a legendary event. The soundtrack is a total banger, pulsing with a rhythmic energy that keeps the momentum high from the first explosive shootout to the massive, chaotic finale in the harbor. THE CONS It misses the 10/10 mark because the stakes can feel a bit thin at times; our heroes are so ridiculously efficient that they never seem to be in any real danger, which takes away some of the tension. The middle part gets slightly sluggish as it moves through the secondary plot involving Eiza González’s undercover agent, which, while high-quality, occasionally slows down the breakneck pace of the main mission. Also, the villain (Til Schweiger) is a bit of a head-scratcher—he’s deliciously evil but lacks the depth to be a truly legendary antagonist, feeling more like a diet version of a Tarantino villain than a fully fleshed-out threat. THE VERDICT A 9/10. An epic, high-octane war flick that is a winner for anyone who likes their history served with a side of heavy artillery and sharp wit. It’s a total banger that proves Ritchie is still a master of the ensemble action genre. While it’s not an honest history lesson, it’s a legendary piece of entertainment that hits all the right notes. This is a quality shout for a Friday night, and easily one of the most fun movies of the year. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Bond Origins: Henry Cavill plays the real-life Gus March-Phillipps, who was one of the primary inspirations for Ian Fleming’s James Bond. Ironically, Fleming himself appears as a character in the film, played by Freddie Fox.• Knife Specialist: Alan Ritchson’s character, Anders Lassen, was a real-life Danish soldier and the only non-Commonwealth recipient of the Victoria Cross. In the film, he uses a bow and knives because the real Lassen was known for his silent, lethal efficiency.• Anachronistic Smoke: During a scene where Cavill reaches for a cigar, the box contains "Fuente OpusX" cigars—a brand that wasn't actually produced until 1995. The real Churchill was famously loyal to Romeo y Julieta. THE VIBE Like a double whiskey in a room full of gunpowder. It smells of expensive leather, sea salt, and the metallic tang of a sharpened combat knife.
