⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Fresh mortuary science graduate Rebecca Owens thinks she’s just landed a quiet night shift at River Fields Mortuary. She’s wrong. Between embalming bodies and shuffling through paperwork, she realizes the cadavers aren't as dead as they should be. Her boss, Raymond, has a dark secret: the mortuary is a hub for demonic activity, and Rebecca has been chosen as a vessel. She has to use her training to identify the specific demon haunting the corpses, perform the correct rituals, and confront her own deep-seated family trauma before she’s possessed permanently. It’s a claustrophobic, high-stakes puzzle where the morgue becomes a literal gateway to hell. THE PROS Willa Holland is a total win as Rebecca; she carries the movie with a punchy, terrified energy that makes you feel every creak of the floorboards. The film stays epic status faithful to the 2022 indie game, keeping the "procedural" horror of the embalming process which is strangely fascinating and quality-level creepy. Paul Sparks as the enigmatic Raymond is a winner, bringing a sincere, eerie gravitas to the "mentor" role. It’s an 8/10 because it nails the atmosphere of isolation—the practical sets of the mortuary look quality and feel genuinely lived-in. The jump scares are punchy and earned, especially the "Mimic" reveals that had the theater jumping. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the middle act, while tense, can feel slightly sluggish for those who haven't played the game, as it leans heavily into the repetitive mechanics of the job. Some of the CGI for the more abstract demonic entities feels a bit quality-deficient compared to the stellar practical effects used for the bodies. It misses a 9/10 mark because the ending feels a bit rushed, cramming a lot of lore into the final ten minutes that could have used a bit more room to breathe.
